Malawi State House security officer, who foiled an armed robbery in the commercial hub of Blantyre on Sunday evening, has earned a promotion from sergeant to sub-inspector in the Malawi Police Service (MPS).

The officer, Patrick Misinjo, wrestled a pistol from a robber at Engen Filling Station at about 6:30pm.

Southern Region Police Headquarters spokesperson Nicholas Gondwa confirmed the promotion.

He said Misinjo frustrated the robbery when he entered the Engen Shop at Kandodo Corner Shop to buy bread.

“One of the robbers held a pistol forcing a sales lady to lie on the floor while three others stuffed money into their bags. They took about K200 000 ($500) cash,” said Gondwa.

Two of the robbers managed to escape with the cash and undisclosed value of airtime while another robber was clobbered to death by a mob that also intervened.

Gondwa said the deceased robber was identified as Gebo Masangano and was a habitual criminal.

The pistol was wrestled from one Stain Gerald Phiri from Kachenga Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Kalembo in Balaka.

Police have since launched a manhunt for the two at large.
