Malawi’s musician reduced to begging again
It never rains but pours for Malawi’s gospel music artist Geoffrey Zigoma.
After undergoing cancer treatment in India late last year, Zigoma is now reduced to seeking financial assistance for chemotherapy medication locally after he claims his medication went missing at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH).
Members of Saint Michael and All Angels Church of the CCAP Blantyre Synod were on Sunday asked to donate towards K72 000 which would equal two cycles of the said chemotherapy the artist needs to undergo starting from Tuesday.
“We are being asked to help our friend who needs K36 000 for cancer treatment on Tuesday and a second treatment after two weeks,” read the announcement. It also went on to state that Zigoma, who happens to be a CCAP member, had volunteered to perform in two of the morning services at the church.
Zigoma was diagnosed with skin cancer three years ago which affected his left ear and cheek. He battled with the problem all along until government sponsored his treatment in India last year.
He said when he came back from India, he was given enough medicine to last him three circles of chemotherapy and he was told to deposit them with a local hospital which he did at QECH.
However, he says when he went to the hospital last week, he was told there was no medicine and should come back the following week.
In an interview, Zigoma, who was visibly in pain and had a bandage over his left year, said the situation was really terrible because he has two cycles of the medication left.
“They kept sending me back and all documents that I brought with me from India are missing,” said Zigoma.
But QECH hospital administrator Themba Mhango said he was not aware of the missing medication.
He said Zigoma’s wife went to the hospital claiming she was collecting her husband’s file as he was coming but went missing with it.
But Zigoma claims the file was taken so he could make copies of the documents he had brought from India and follow up on his missing medicines.
