MAM for speedy distribution of relief food

With hunger already rearing its ugly head in some parts of the country, the Muslim Association of Malawi (MAM) has called on government and donors to speed up the distribution of relief food to affected families.

MAM deputy general secretary Ali Kantwanje made the call in Mangochi recently when he presided over the distribution of relief items to 120 poor farming families.

The donation came from the Islamic non-governmental organisation (NGO), Dedza Welfare Trust (DWT), whose aim is to aid less privileged communities in times of destitution.

Kantwanje said timely distribution of relief items would save poor families from hunger-induced deficiencies, which may result in diseases such as malnutrition.

“Government and the non-governmental organisations that support it should speed up the maize distribution exercise before it is too late to bail out the affected families. Many families in the Southern and Eastern regions have no food. We, therefore, appeal to well-wishers to join government efforts in alleviating the suffering among the affected Malawians,” he said.

DWT has since donated maize flour, rice, sugar, kitchen salt and cooking oil to affected families in Mangochi with financial support from the Islamic Zakaat Fund (IZF).
