Man killed for alleged bonya theft

Mzuzu Police have arrested nine people charged for the alleged murder of a 44–year-old man at Chambo Trading Centre in Mzimba.

Mzuzu Police spokesperson Maurice Chapola identified the deceased as Kafumbi Chione of Eliya Village, Traditional Authority Mtwalo in Mzimba.

Chapola said Chione picked a quarrel with a suspect Black Munthali, 22, of Kawonavichi Village, Traditional Authority Mtwalo whom he accused of stealing his bonya.

He said the accusations did not please the suspect and he publicly warned that he would take unspecified action against Chione before withdrawing from the drinking joint, leaving the deceased and his brother.

Said Chapola: “The suspect allegedly mobilised accomplices and waylaid the deceased at a maize field near Chamono River. When Chione and his brother were about to cross the river, the suspects beat them up, leaving the deceased unconscious while his brother managed to crawl to the next village where he sought refuge.”

Passers-by, discovered Chione in the morning in a pool of blood and took him to Ekwendeni Hospital.

However, Ekwendeni Hospital referred him to Mzuzu Central Hospital (MCH) where he died.

A post-mortem from MCH indicated that the death occurred due to head injuries.

Chapola said the nine suspects face murder charges contrary to Section 209 of the Penal Code. Maximum penalty for murder is death.
