Marinica courts coaches body on backroom staff

Newly-appointed Flames coach Mario Marinica has asked the National Football Coaches Association (NFCA) to propose a list of coaches that can make his backroom staff.

The Romanian was appointed Flames coach by the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) executive committee on Saturday, replacing Meck Mwase, who has since been redeployed as Under-23 national team coach.

In an interview yesterday, the 58-year-old tactician said he will cast his net wide to ensure he assembles a good backroom staff.

He said: “Coming up with a backroom staff will not be an easy task.

Marinica: It won’t be an easy task

“Obviously, I had a good experience working with Meck, Lovemore [Fazili], Bob [Mpinganjira], Patrick [Mabedi] and DeKlerk [Msakakuona]. So, I know them. I know their strengths and weaknesses.

“However, I am open to see others that I haven’t worked with, so as I did with the players, I will apply the same principle with the coaches. I want to give them a chance to see what they can bring on the table.

“To that effect, I have had a discussion with the national coaches body to suggest five to six names that I can work with.”

Marinica said he expects the coaches to help him in monitoring players, game and video analysis and they will be submitting period reports.

“The other crucial criteria is that they should be computer literate,” he said.

But Marinica did not rule out the possibility of retaining previous technical panel members.

In an interview yesterday, NFCA chairperson Aubrey Nankhuni confirmed meeting Marinica.

He said: “We met him as well as the FAM president [Walter Nyamilandu] to seek an explanation on the changes in the technical panel and the plans going forward.

“So, they both gave their sides and during our discussion with Mario, it was indeed agreed that we suggest a list of names that he can consider working with which we feel is a positive development.”
