Masm fetes squash spectacle

The motto of a life partner in health was evident when health insurance provider Medical Aid Society of Malawi (Masm) feted the squash fraternity over the weekend through the Masm Malawi Closed Squash Tournament.

Aubrey Taulo underlined his supremacy on the local scene when he threw all the manners to the wind and showed no mercy in the destruction of his elder brother, Julius, with a thumping three straight set grand finale.

Aubrey Taulo (L) hoists the trophy as Mungomo (R) and Mtumbuka look on

That was after he saw-off James Matewere’s spirited challenge in the semis.

The in-form Aubrey walked taller and faster to ensure that the hoping prospects have enough to ponder about in the New Year.

As a solace, Matewere squeezed himself between the Taulo trio by beating Chisomo in a third-place play-off.

In the B division, Mayamiko Mwinjilo shook-off his underachieving tag to thump Alex Kateleka, ensuring that he starts the forthcoming 2019 Masm Squash League as a consequential player.

In third place play-offs, it was a battle of presidents as incumbent Matthews Mtumbuka was taught a lasting leadership lesson by his predecessor Jimmy Kawaye.

Veteran Wilma Roscoe has taken short time to shake-off her disappointment at losing her crown as the undisputed ladies champion. She outclassed all her challengers, including Lucille Kalele in the finals after Tendai Rashid had suffered under the brutal driving of her racket.

Beto Lasacco, also appears to be trying to set the gauntlet in juniors like his mother, Wilma. The teen outclassed Thumbiko Mtumbuka and Dickson Gondwe, respectively.

Masm branch manager for Central Region Albert Mungomo was impressed with what was on show.

He said: “We are upbeat about squash sponsorship and for our partnership building when it comes to health insurance. We say the sky is the limit!”

Taking his turn, Mtumbuka was all praises for the medical aid firm.

“We have a true partner! Squash needed an exercise in great health and wellness. Masm ticks all the boxes. Malawi Closed  is the flagship local tournament and an exercise of challenge and Masm has passed the test. We can only say thank you,” he said.

In his victory speech,  Aubrey thanked Masm for setting the agenda “not just for the competition, but the investment too. I am looking forward to the league challenge.”
