Mayor’s Trophy tourney impresses FDH Bank

FDH Bank plc expect fireworks in today’s Mzuzu City Mayor’s Trophy finals at Mzuzu Stadium.

Managing director Noel Mkulichi  said this after being impressed with the Lilongwe City finals last weekend.

The bank bankrolls the schools’ football and netball competition in Lilongwe, Mzuzu and Zomba cities to the tune of K165 million for three years.

But after watching the Lilongwe final at  Bingu National Stadium, Mkulichi said  they were happy with talent development progress.

“We are impressed with the standard of play in the Lilongwe City’s finals. We enjoyed every moment as Kamuzu Barracks and Chiwoko primary schools faced off in football finals. The netball final involving Ngwenya 2 and Kamkodola primary schools was also a marvel to watch. This is what we expect as Mzuzu holds its finals this Saturday,” he said.

Zomba City Mayor’s Trophy final will be held on August 5 at Zomba Police Ground.

Mkulichi reiterated the bank’s commitment to sponsoring the tournament, which he said is beneficial to the youth.

“The trophy keeps the youth busy, preventing them from engaging in harmful behaviour and giving them an opportunity to become responsible adults. As a bank that champions community growth and youth development, we will continue to support the competition,” he said.

In the Lilongwe final, Kamuzu Barracks beat Chiwoko 2-1 while Ngwenya 2 triumphed 23-20 over Kamkodola in netball.

Kamuzu Barracks sports teacher Tionge Alex Kavuta said they are happy to have  won the ttophy after finishing third in the 2019 edition.

Lilongwe’s football and netball champions will engage their Mzuzu and Zomba counterparts in the K20 million inter-city tournament on yet-to-be-announced dates.
