Mbewe: Dont give people false hopes

Leader of Calvary Family Church (CFC) Apostle Madalitso Mbewe, has warned fellow clergy against ‘building false hopes’ among people living with HIV and Aids (PLWHA).

This comes at a time when some self-acclaimed prophets and apostles are challenging people living with HIV and Aids (PLWHA) that they can be cured of the disease through prayers.

But in an interview on the sidelines of an HIV and Aids training for telecounselors, CFC radio and TV staff last weekend, Apostle Mbewe rebuked some pastors and apostles for misguiding people thereby putting people’s lives at risk.

“Whilst it is acknowledged that there are no impossibilities with God, we need to tread carefully on the information we give to people on HIV and Aids. We can pray for them, but we don’t need to stop them from taking medication,” he said.

He added: “I must emphasise that God uses different ways to heal the sick, including medical doctors. It would be absurd; therefore, if we start discrediting the good work doctors are doing in various hospitals. It’s advisable to believers that prayers should be employed to complement the medication doctors have prescribed for us.”

He observed that some people have lost their lives earlier after stopping anti-retroviral therapy (ART) because they were fed with false promises of healing.

The apostle explained that with funding from National Aids Commission (NAC), CFC Transformation has devised programmes aimed at offering expert counseling to people infected or affected with the disease through phone-calls.

“One of the challenges Aids fight is facing is stigma. To deal with this problem, we have designed our programmes in such a way that the identity of the person is not revealed.

“One simply has to call and talk to professional counselors without being forced to identify himself or herself,” said Mbewe.n
