Mulanje Last Boxing Promotions (MLBP) director Mike ‘Bangwe 1’ Chitenje has expressed interest to join in mainstream politics.

During the week, Chitenje revealed that he will contest for the post of director of youth for the South during Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) regional elections in Blantyre on July 21.

He, however, said his political ambitions would not jeopardise operations of his boxing promotions body which is seeking support from the corporate world for big bouts it is planning to organise.

The promoter is currently discussing with his Zambian counterparts the possibility of organising a fight between Malawi Defence Force (MDF) boxer ChimwemweChiotcha and Zimbabwean Charles Manyuchi later this year. Chitenje is also arranging local bouts involving another MDF boxer Osgood Kayuni.

“There are so many politicians who own companies, but their businesses are not negatively affected by politics. It will be the same with me because MLBP is run as an independent company for boxing promotion,” he said.

Recently, Mchinji Boys Boxing Promotions director Justice Katika also expressed interest to contest for a parliamentary seat during the 2014 Tripartite Elections in Bangwe, Blantyre.n
