Malawi Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (MCCCI) has challenged the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) to widen its scope on revenue collection instead of “milking” the few in the formal sector.

MCCCI councillor Lusubilo Chakaniza said this on Friday in Mzuzu when MRA launched the Taxpayer Service Charter.

She said: “Companies would always want to comply because you want to have clean audits and financial statements.

“But small and medium enterprises simply want to survive and you find a situation where MRA neglects that component, which could as well bring a lot of revenue to MRA.”

Chakaniza, who is also Ethanol Company Limited chief executive officer, said MRA is always busy with large corporates instead of going where they are not collecting.

MRA commissioner general John Biziwick said they know that the perception of Malawians on the institution has not been good.

“One of the things that brings about negative perception is that the public is not aware of their rights and obligations and for us, it is important that we share the issue with the public,” he said.

MRA board member Lincoln Bailey said the charter will enhance integrity and good governance within the tax collection agency, adding they understand that integrity is fundamental in maintaining public trust and confidence in the tax system.

The charter sets up the standards of service expected to be delivered at MRA as a public commitment to a measurable level of performance.
