The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has formed a task force to steer debates for presidential candidates as the country approaches tripartite elections to be held on May 20 2014.

In a media statement released on Friday, MEC spokesperson Sangwani Mwafulirwa said the debates will provide an important public space to generate dialogue on citizen interests regarding the future and direction of Malawi.

He said the task force has been established in line with MEC’s electoral calendar.

“Around the world, presidential candidate debates are used to enable citizens to learn more about their candidates and policies in order to make informed electoral choices,” said Mwafulirwa.

According to Mwafulirwa, the task force, which will be operate independently, has 11 members and will discuss and agree on the modalities of holding the debates in collaboration with the commission.

“Members of the task force have been drawn from various civil society organisations and broadcast media houses basing on the expertise,” he said.
