Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has for the first time slot in quality control managers to undertake the whole election process through next year.

Commissioner Dr. Wellington Nakanga disclosed this during the opening of a two- day training workshop of voter registration supervisors and constituency retaining officers in Liwonde on Wednesday.

Commissioner Nakanga said the quality control managers will ensure that information collected in the field is correct before it is sent to the Commission.

“We have engaged quality control managers whose major role will be to check on the quality of data captured if it is of high standard,” said Nakanga.

He added that the importance of having the quality control managers in the electoral process cannot be over emphasized as the commission will not waste time in ‘garbage in garbage out’ process as the work would already be done by the managers.

Said Nakanga: “The voter registration supervisors and the constituency returning officers need to be more compliant in discharging their duties as the outcome of voter registration exercise determines the success of elections.”

One of the participants, Type Assan, from Mpombe (Machinga East) said the knowledge imparted to him at the training will go a long way in helping to improve service delivery.

“This training will help me so much that when I go to the field I will know what to do in ensuring that applicants who come to register are solely eligible voters,” he said.

Machinga district has 166 registration centers. The participants were from Machinga East and Machinga Central East Constituencies. The two constituencies have 33 and 13 registration centers respectively.
