A birdie on the first hole inspired Kingsley Chimdima Mhango to win the Kingfisher Insurance Brokers and Consultants Seniors’ Golf Tournament at Country Club Limbe (CCL) on Blantyre on Sunday.

Playing off handicap (h/c) 11, Mhango tied on 39 points with Ian Bonongwe (16h/c), but as per senior golfers’ rules, the former won because he is older in terms of age.

Said Mhango: “I had four shots on hole one. I also had pars on every hole except for six and nine where I dropped shots and that made a difference.”

James ‘JJ’ Chikapa (h/c24) was third with 38 points. With 20 points, Felix Mlusu had the best front nine score while Tony Chiwaya did it on the back with 20 points.

Clement Kafuwa Jnr (h/c24) won the non-seniors category with 34 points followed by Boniface Tivalenji (h/c19) with 38 points while Chapusa Phiri (h/c19) was third with 37 points.

In ladies category, Arnes Araujo won with 39 points after counting out Sophie Kalambule (h/c28). Bose Kamphulusa (h/c25) was third with 37 points.

Patrick Chiona won the falcon category.

Kingfisher finance and administration manager Chimwemwe Julius said they sponsored the tournament to thank the senior golfers for being loyal clients.

“This we do not take for granted. As for the future, if you talk to us nicely, we will be back,” he said.

The insurance brokerage and consultancy firm’s business development manager Shadrick Khunga said a field of 79 golfers was testimony of how highly the Kingfisher brand is held.

Senior golfers’ captain Nyakhokho Nsona thanked Kingfisher for sponsoring the tournament.
