A Malawian journalist and media entrepreneur running media tech start-up, iHubOnline, has been accepted into the Microsoft Startups Founders Hub, gaining access to $150,000 (MK 255,000,000) in support of the startup’s ChewaGPT project.

Mallick Mnela, the founder of iHubOnline, expressed enthusiasm about the offered mentorship, OpenAI ChatGPT credits, Azure Credits, and other empowering resources, believing they will expedite their growth.

“We aren’t receiving cash. Instead, they’re covering costs for technology to support our critical computing and artificial intelligence (AI), marketing, mentorship and fundraising needs while we focus on product development,” said Mnela, whose start-up focuses on media and communication.

Microsoft’s communication, addressed to Mnela, indicates that the tech giant will provide essential resources including Azure’s large-scale AI models, developer tools, business support, marketing assistance, and guidance for fundraising and investment readiness across various stages of the startup’s growth.

Microsoft for Startups Founders Hub is a digital ecosystem removing barriers to building a company with free access to technology, coaching, and support for founders in any stage of development.

Mnela said they pitched a project that revolves around refining ChewaGPT, a Chichewa adaptation of OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

Currently, Chichewa, as a low resource language, performs poorly on the ChatGPT platform, necessitating the training of custom Chichewa models.

iHubOnline has been experimenting with Chichewa improvements and identified considerable potential for enhancement.

“We’re dealing with complex issues requiring interdisciplinary collaboration. Lack of resources has been a major issue. This support offers hope of better days ahead,” stated Mnela.

Mnela said iHubOnline intends to make a contribution towards making Chichewa a fashionable and convenient way of communicating and learning in social contexts.

Established in 2019 as a digital media agency, iHubOnline expanded its portfolio to include Artificial Intelligence (AI) in 2023.

The company has actively participated in prestigious global and continental fellowship programs on AI, including the AI Academy for Small Newsrooms by the London School of Economics and the Data and Artificial Intelligence Fellowship by the DW Akademie.
