Ministry advises parents to send children with disabilities to school

The Ministry of Education has appealed to parents and guardians in Dowa District to send their children to school to help promote inclusive education.

The ministry’s director of inclusive education and school health Arnold Kaira said this on Friday when Development Aid from People to People (Dapp) Malawi launched the Building a Brighter Future for Girls and Children with Disabilities Programme at Jemusi Primary School in the district.

He said: “We would like to see every parent and guardian bring their children to school because this project will not be successful if the parents do not do that.

“We would like to make the tendency of locking children with disabilities a thing of the past.”

On his part, Dapp director of programmes Ernest Mlapura

said he was happy that his organisation was supporting inclusive education in the district.

“We feel this initiative will not only reduce teacher to pupil ratio but also help promote quality education in the country,” he said.

Zione Sikoti, a parent of a child with disability from Sasani Village in Traditional Authority Chiwere in the district, commended Dapp for the initiative.

The event was commemorated under the theme ‘Breaking barriers: Promoting inclusive education through a shared responsibility’.

Dapp also trains primary school teachers to help reduce pupil to teacher ratio, especially in schools in rural areas.

Dapp is running the project in partnership with the Malawi Government with support from Finland.
