Ministry takes peace talks to Karonga

Ministry of Gender, Community Development and Social Welfare says the development of the National Action Plan (NAP) on conflict resolution is a significant milestone in promoting peace ahead of the September 16 2025 General Election.

In an interview on Tuesday at the beginning of a three-day monitoring and prevention training for human rights institutions and structures, the ministry’s deputy director of gender mainstreaming Ronald Edward Phiri said the framework regards stakeholders as key in supporting mechanisms for peaceful resolutions and conflict management.

“In most cases, the youth are used as architects or agents of political violence; hence, the strategic document which will be used as a benchmark to respond to violence,” he said.

On his part, Ministry of Youth and Sports principal youth officer Edwin Nkumbadzala said the orientation was timely as the country is drawing closer to the general elections.

He said: “As you can see, the dissemination of this NAP has drawn traditional and religious leaders, civil society organisations, government officials and the youth themselves who will

be empowered to ensure that there is nobody left behind in the process of maintaining peace.

“Again, it has also incorporated sexual gender-based violence training because these two complement each other.”

On her part, Karonga district gender officer Ireen Mwenelupembe challenged the stakeholders to take up the responsibility to popularise the policy to youth clubs in the district.

The peace-building and conflict resolution strategy follows the domestication of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2250 on Youth, Peace and Security adopted in December 2015.

With support from the United Nations Populations Fund, Pamoza Tingakwaniska Youth Organisation sponsored the training with funds from the United Nations Secretary General
