Miss, Mr Albinism in continental contest

 Miss and Mr Albinism Malawi are set to contest in the Miss and Mr Albinism Africa slated for June 23 at Margolis Resort in Harare, Zimbabwe.

The pageant is aimed at raising awareness and promoting inclusivity under the Albinism Dare to Dream Initiative (Addi).

Speaking in an interview yesterday, Miss Albinism Malawi Patricia Liwonde said she is eagerly anticipating to showcase Malawi’s pride, peaceful attributes and cultural heritage.

“I am looking forward to represent Malawi at the contest. I hope I will come back with the title so that I can have a bigger voice as an advocate for people with albinism. There is more that we need to change and I believe this platform will help us achieve that change,” said the University of Malawi fourth-year social and economic history student.

On his part, Mr Albinism Malawi Smart Vinti said he is thrilled to represent his country at this first regional pageant.

He said: “Participating in the contest will significantly boost my career as a model since it provides a platform to gain exposure, networking and increased visibility. The recognition within the modeling industry will take my career to the next level.”

Meanwhile, the two models are appealing to well-wishers to support them meet their travel and accommodation costs estimated a K7 million.

 According to a story published in My Afrika Magazine of April 7, the Mr and Miss Albinism Africa pageant and the African Diversity Festival will begin with a boot camp on June 23 under the theme ‘Shining in the Rainbow Africa.’

Addi executive director Brenda Mudzimu said the initiative seeks to advocate for the rights of persons with albinism and raise awareness to ensure these rights are promoted, protected, fulfilled and respected.

“The event is designed to inspire participants, helping them gain personal recognition, self-confidence, interpersonal and communication skills, stress management skills, personal grooming skills and advocacy skills,” she said.

In all, 31 contestants from 18 African countries will compete for the crowns.
