Mlatho Farming Enterprise trains 192 young farmers
At least 192 young farmers in Mchinji have received training in permaculture as one way of promoting sustainable agriculture and improving livelihoods.
Mlatho Agri-learning Hub conducted the five-day training for the young farmers in the district.
Mlatho Agri-learning Hub director Daniel Chibwe said they are implementing a project called Transforming Agriculture Using Permaculture Practices, which encourages young farmers to use locally available resources.
“This is an initiative that was born in as early as 2018 after noticing that some youth struggle to engage in serious farming owing to proper training,” he said.
Chibwe said the organisation plans to train 1 000 youths by December 2025.
He also said they want to distribute 150 000 local and fruit trees to the youth and the community as one way of empowering them in agriculture and entrepreneurship as envisioned in Malawi 2063.
Mchinji district youth officer Maudlin Nhema said by training the youth in such initiatives, the country is laying a solid foundation for growth of agriculture.
One of the beneficiaries, Lisitina Benjamin, said the acquired skills will help the youth to enhance agriculture productivity.
Mlatho Agri-learning Hub is implementing the project in the district with support from Permaculture Australia.
