M’Mbelwa Council plans to upgrade Mzimba roads
M’Mbelwa District Council says it has obtained a loan to buy a grader to rehabilitate roads in Mzimba District.
In an interview, the council’s director of planning and development Walter Chikuni said about 90 percent of the roads in the district are in poor condition.
He said: “We have a grader that was grounded because it could no longer function after serving for a long time. So, the idea is to buy a new one to be used for grading roads in the district.

“The objective is to improve the state of our road network.”
Chikuni said the council proposes to buy CAT GC grader designed to do road maintenance, construction and land development.
“The estimated cost for the motor grader is in the range of K600 million to K950 million. It is to be bought through a loan,” he said.
On his part, Traditional Authority Kampingo Sibande welcomed the idea to obtain a loan to buy the grader.
“The idea is good in that we have many unpaved roads in most areas. Upgrading these roads will ease transport challenges people are facing,” he said.
Councillor Christopher Ngoma of Mabilabo Ward in Mzimba Luwerezi Constituency said
people are using rugged roads; hence, the initiative will improve road network.
Ephraim Songa, a resident at the boma said they have been crying for good roads in Mzimba.
“We support the idea because most of the roads are in a sorry state. I live in Chikusa and the roads from the boma become impassable during the rainy season,” he said
