Malawi Olympic Committee (MOC) has given Table Tennis Association of Malawi (Ttam) K500 000 (about $1 250) to identify 16 talented players in readiness for mini-Olympics next year.

Ttam communications officer Charles Kasenda said the programme was scheduled to start yesterday at Limbe Primary School in Blantyre, Balaka in the Eastern Region and in Mzuzu.

In Lilongwe, the games will be played at Kamuzu Institute for Sports on Tuesday, which happens to be Mother’s Day.

“The selected cream from all the regions in all categories are expected to battle it out from November 21-24November at Kamuzu Institute for Sports in Lilongwe.

“All regional games will be monitored by representatives from MOC to ensure there are no irregularities in the selection of players.

“Through these tournaments, Ttam will have the best national teams for both juniors and seniors in all categories,” said Kasenda.

Top three winners in boys and girls senior categories will cart home K5 000, K3 000 and K2 000 while winners in the junior categories will receive K3 000, K2 000 and K1 000, respectively.

Kasenda commended MOC, saying the sponsorship will enhance competition among players.

“We are calling upon other sponsors to do likewise. We want more competitions so that our youth are kept busy,” he said.
