Moses Kunkuyu
Malawi Government spokesperson and Minister of Information, I would tread carefully on the threat to unleash proper penalties on companies that will not reduce prices of their products following the appreciation of the kwacha.
I would appreciate that while it is good that government is pushing for price reduction of goods, there are other issues that need to be looked into.
If I were Hon. Kunkuyu, I would realise that there are several things that are considered when pricing commodities and it is not as straight-forward as I am seeing it.
Instead of threatening the ‘defiant’ companies, I would first of all find out from them why they have not reduced prices of the commodities when the local currency is picking up.
If only I were my man that is Kunkuyu, I would recall that it was the same government that declared that it would not intervene in the pricing of goods when the kwacha was depreciating.
I would, therefore, appreciate that it is unrealistic for government to act as ‘wisemen’ from the east now.
That is if only I were Kunkuyu. Fortunately, I am
not the government spokesperson.
