Mother’s Fun Run Volleyball Tourney raises K700 000

Mipuniro Spikers have raised K755 350 from a charity volleyball tournament the club organised on Saturday at Bingu National Stadium (BNS) court in Lilongwe to raise funds for Nation Publications Limited (NPL) Mother’s Fun Run.

NPL and its partners seek to raise funds towards improving safe motherhood in Ntcheu and Likoma districts health offices.

One of the organisers of the tournament, Trust Mtegha, said they expect to raise more after the event was shifted from  October 14 to November 2.

“Well-wishers can still come and contribute. Let me also inform the nation that the tournament will be an annual event,” he said.

Speaking after the games, NPL marketing manager Albert Banda thanked Mipuniro for the initiative.

He said: “Nation Publications Limited is encouraged by the step Mipuniro Spikers have taken. This is not the first time they have organised such an event towards the cause.

“We are grateful and encouraged that the tournament has been dominated by men as we would like them to take an active role in helping the mothers.”

During the tournament, Contine Investments emerged champions with eight points from four games. They beat Old Mutual Life Assurance Company and Kamuzu College of Nursing with 2-0 margins.

In their last game,Contine Investments beat defending champions University of North Carolina (UNC) Project 2-0.

As champions, Contine received a trophy and 12 gold medals while runners-up UNC Project got 12 silver medals.

Old Mutual and Kamuzu College of Nursing (KCN) finished on third and fourth positions, respectively. In the exhibition games, Team Ntcheu beat Team Likoma 2-1 in the women’s category while Team Likoma  overcame Ntcheu in the men’s category.
