Moyale Barracks FC  on Saturday qualified for Carlsberg Cup finals after beating fellow Army side Red Lions 1-0 at the Mzuzu Stadium.

A 31st-minute powerful strike from Gastin Simkonda earned the Kaning’ina soldiers the deserved win.

Moyale’s victory followed brilliant goalkeeping by McDonald Harawa and great defending skills from Lameck Thindwa and Edson Chirwa.

However, although Moyale were the better side of the afternoon, they were wasteful as they missed a lot of scoring opportunities, especially through striker Deus Nkutu.

Nkutu failed to score from many chances created by his teammates such as Steve Mkandawire, Sandress Munthali and Chrispin Fukizi.

Despite the defeat, Red Lions were a good side to watch.

In the 81-minute, the visitors equalised through Kumbukani Mwambene, but referee Ben Tchongwe ruled it off side.

Said Red Lions assistant coach Lubadiri Kazombo: “My players lacked composure in front of our opponent’s goal, hence the loss.”

Kazombo also faulted Tchongwe for denying them a clear goal.

Moyale Barracks assistant coach Charles Kamanga said he was happy that his side was now in the finals.

“I pat my boys on the back for their skilful display,” he said.

The win means Moyale Barracks will meet winners between Blantyre United and Kamuzu Barracks, who play today, in the final.
