MP denounces corruption

Mzuzu City legislator Bennex Mwamlima (Malawi Congress Party) has condemned corruption in the management of Constituency Development Fund (CDF).

He said this on Friday in Mzuzu during the opening of four new bridges in Chiputula and Mzilawayingwe.

Mwamlima also launched the construction of Chiputula Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation (Admarc) facility.

The legislator hailed the partnership between his office and Mzuzu City Council for utilising CDF prudently but faulted those attempting to misuse public funds.

“Stealing from the government is evil and no different from housebreaking. I urge my fellow members of Parliament [MPs] and public servants to desist from such practices,” said.

Mzuzu City Council public works service committee chairperson James Mhlanga said there have been no reports of corruption or misuse of CDF in the constituency, attributing it to a strong oversight role from the legislator.

He, however, said the major challenge was the constant depreciation of the kwacha.

“While the CDF was raised from K100 million to K200 million, the adjustment merely offsets the currency’s lost value,” said Mhlanga.

Chiputula Ward senior bloc leader Kingston Myaba commended the MP for the bridge, saying it solved mobility challenges.

He also said the Admarc project will help residents overcome challenges in accessing maize.

“For most city residents, they buy the staple grain, so Chiputula Admarc will serve not only Chiputula, Katawa, Zolozolo and Mzilawayingwe but also surrounding townships,” he said.

The construction of Chiputula Admarc will cost about K40 million.
