MP motivates learners to work hard in school
Lilongwe Msinja South legislator Francis Belekanyama has appealed to candidates sitting for the 2023 Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) examinations to take education seriously as it has the potential to transform their lives.
He said this on Sunday during the presentation of awards to best students from 116 graduating students from Chankhandwe Community Day Secondary School (CDSS), Kalonga CDSS, Mselera CDSS and Chiunjiza CDSS in his constituency.
Said Belekanyama: “This year, we wanted to show our appreciation to learners who have done well as one way of motivating them to do even better in this year’s MSCE examinations.
“It is my hope that they will do well and make us proud as a constituency.”
Presiding over the ceremony, Deputy Minister of Local Government, Unity and Culture Owen Chomanika encouraged girls to work hard and asked parents to desist from forcing their children into early marriages.
He said: “We cannot talk about development if we forget the girl child. As such, this is one event that has shown other young girls in this area that if they work hard, they will also be celebrated the way their friends have been celebrated.”
The deputy minister also asked traditional leaders in the area to consider involving the graduating students in village development committees for them to be role models in their communities.
A student from Chankhandwe CDSS, Deborah Mapezi, who spoke on behalf of her fellow students, said lack of learning materials such as books and desks, shortage of teachers as well as hostels for girls remain some of the challenges in their quest to access quality education.
Among others, the best performing students received school bags, mathematical instruments and calculators, caps and writing materials.
Malawi National Examinations Board started administering MSCE examinations yesterday.
