Mponda wants three strikers

Newly-crowned TNM Super League champions Silver Strikers coach Peter ‘Mjojo’ Mponda says he will need to beef up his squad with three strikers if they are to effectively compete in the 2025/26 TotalEnergies CAF Champions League.

He was reacting to Reserve Bank of Malawi Governor Wilson Banda’s statement that a determination on the club’s readiness for the continental showpiece will come  from the technical panel, which the coach heads.

In an interview yesterday, the Mponda said: “We need at least three strikers, especially a hitman for our team to complete and compete at such an elite stage.

“Going by the [TNM Super League] statistics, we scored 58 goals, the highest, but none of our strikers reached 10 goals.”

During a cocktail which the central bank hosted for the club in Lilongwe on Saturday to celebrate its first league title in 11 years, Banda said: “For us as a sponsor, it will be the financial support, which we are ready to provide.

“But the decision on the team’s readiness has to come from the technical panel, they need to demonstrate their capability.”

Ironically, the league’s second leading scorer was Creck Sporting Club’s George Chiomba with 12 goals, who was released by the Bankers at the start of the season. He scored five goals behind golden boot winner, midfielder Isaac ‘Tcheya’ Kaliyati of Mighty Mukuru Wanderers.

Reacting to Mponda’s stand, Silver chief executive officer Patrick Chimimba  said will soon have meeting with their technical team to review the just-ended season.

“The review will include an assessment of the whole squad and to discuss the technical wish-list. As we have always done, we will try as much as possible to give the coach the players that he wants,” he said
