People’s Party (PP) deputy publicity secretary Ken Msonda has defied his secretary general (SG) Paul Maulidi on the call to apologise for the ‘war’ threats he made against Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) following the Mulanje fracas.

Maulidi on Monday during the official opening of PP Northern Province offices in Mzuzu called on Msonda to apologise and make a clarification on the same, arguing PP does not believe in war.

“As the party, we are distancing ourselves from the war threats. We do not believe in violence and the deputy publicity secretary must apologise,” said Maulidi.

He further said it is the duty of police and courts to bring to justice violence culprits as the party does not have such powers.

Maulidi said not even PP members will be spared if they promote violence.

PP provincial chair (North) Frank Mwenefumbo also said the party does not believe in violence and people who promote violence will be taken to task.

He said PP has to lead by example in promoting peace within and outside the party.

However, Msonda yesterday, said there was nothing to retract or apologise; arguing DPP should stop persecuting PP members.

“There is nothing to withdraw and nothing to apologise [for], I stand by what I said; DPP should stop the nonsense. As a party, we have the responsibility and obligation to make sure our party members, supporters and followers are safe and live peacefully,” said Msonda

Legal commentator Justin Dzonzi said Msonda needed to apologise, arguing that as a party in government PP should be the first to respect the law.

“Two wrongs cannot make a right. The stands the two are taking is also sending a bad signal about the party,” said Dzonzi.
