Mtenje launches poetry book

University of Malawi (Unima) associate professor in the Department of Literary Studies Asante Lucy Mtenje on Sunday launched a collection of poems book in Zomba.

The book, titled Forms of Slaughter, comprises 35 poems and is divided into four sections, namely Talking bodies, Water bodies, Quotidian and Heartstrings.

Mtenje said the book presents a magnificently womanhood in Malawi and broader African context.

“The book renders the interior lives of women many of whom lack resources and respect,” she said.

Pen Malawi president Alfred Msadala said despite the rising digitalisation,  poets should not stop publishing books.

He said digitalisation should complement literature and should not kill hard copies.

“Even if you check with the Amazon, the best selling books are printed,” said Msadala.

He urged budding poets not to discard any copies of poems they write but keep them to be published in the future.

“Malawi needs to support the poetry industry,” said Msadala.

The launch was spiced up with various acoustic music and notable notable poets such as Zondiwe Mbano and Francis Moto.
