Mungo Park shuts down

Listen to this article

One of Lilongwe entertainment hubs Mungo Park has closed shop.

The development means musicians wishing to hold shows at a big venue in the capital city will only rely on the popular Wakawaka Hotel and Lilongwe Golf Club.

A visit to the one time hive of entertainment, found ground work going on, but not related to entertainment. The once strong stage that saw both local and international artists perform is, but ruins, as it was demolished.

Not mentioning the make shift and permanent bars inside the brick fence that together made Mungo Park, the place for entertainment.

The only reminder is a big billboard inscribed with The New Mungo Park, which perhaps smacks of a mockery considering its current state.

“The place was sold some months ago. I cannot say as to when since I am employed. The new owners are in construction business that is why you can see there are a number of caterpillars,” said one of the workers who refused to be named.

The last show at the new venue was held on September 8 when Ugandan star Jose Chameleon held a country wide tour of Malawi.

With the coming in of Wakawaka, nothing much had been heard of Mungo or Golf Club as the new place is the in thing in Lilongwe.

However, in an interview one of the Lilongwe based music promoters Abel Kumwenda of Phindu Promotions said Mungo closed shop some three months ago.

Former owner of Mungo Park, Janvier Ngoga could not be drawn to comment as he is currently in Rwanda on holiday.
