Muslims mark Eid today, urge peaceful elections
Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations marking the end of the Holy Month of Ramadhan will be observed today in the country and the Muslims Association of Malawi (MAM) has called on muslims and all Malawians to pray for peaceful September 16 2025 General Election.
In an interview yesterday, MAM publicity secretary Sheikh Dinala Chabulika said the moon was sighted yesterday evening and celebrations would take place today across the country.

He said as people who have been fasting for 30 days, muslims should pray for God’s intervention in economic challenges facing the country and for peaceful elections.
Said Chabulika: “We should pray that stakeholders involved in the elections should be transparent and not favour anyone so that there should be no chaos. We also call on political parties to encourage their members to avoid violence during this election period.”
In Blantyre, Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations will take place at Kamuzu Upper Stadium where there will be prayers and lectures by MAM leadership.
Speaking in a separate interview, second deputy Speaker of Parliament Aisha Mambo Adams said she will celebrate wi t h p eopl e o f Mangochi Nkungulu Constituency.
She advised muslims to make requests to Allah to guide them in choosing good leaders during the September 16 elections.
“As muslims, we should also not be involved in any type of violence during campaign,” said Adams.
On his par t, United Democratic Front president Atupele Muluzi said Eid ul-Fitr is a time of renewed faith, unity and generosity.
“As we celebrate this joyous occasion, let us embrace the
spirit of peace and compassion, remembering those who are less fortunate. Let us also use this moment to strengthen our bonds as one nation, committed to building a better, more prosperous Malawi for all,” he said.
On March 25, the Ministry of Local Government, Unity and Culture said the Eid-ul- Fitr holiday in Malawi would be observed either today or tomorrow depending on the sighting of the new moon.
Muslims in the country started observing the Holy Month of Ramadhan on March 1 2025 and for 30 days, they were fasting from sunrise to sunset.
It is believed that around 610 AD, Prophet Muhammad was chosen by Allah to act as a messenger to people, spreading his teachings.
Thus, Ramadhan is a commemoration of the first revelation of the Quran to Muhammad.
National Grand Mufti Sheikh Uthuman Mthalika is expected to attend the Eid-Ul-Fitr prayers in Blantyre.
