Mutharika beckons former DPP members
Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) leader Peter Mutharika has asked the party’s former members, who defected to other political parties, to rejoin the immediate-past governing party.
The former president, who is also DPP torchbearer in the September 16 2025 General Election, noted that the decision by former members to rejoin the party will increase its chances of returning to power next year.
He was speaking yesterday during a whistle-stop tour in Chikwawa and Nsanje where, among others, he wooed people who will turn 18 years before the elections and those above 18 years to go and register to enable them vote next year.
Said Mutharika: “I want to let you know that there are no more squabbles in DPP because we chased away all the troublemakers.
“So those who defected to either MCP [Malawi Congress Party], UTM, UDF [United Democratic Front] or PP [People’s Party], you have the right to return to DPP to make the party strong and return into power in September next year. DPP is a big spacious house, and everyone has a space in this room.”
He further assured Malawians that if voted into power again, his administration will bring more changes by reducing prices of commodities such as soap, sugar, salt, cooking oil and fertiliser, among other things.
“But for this to happen, there is need to boot out this rotten [Tonse] administration. So, to achieve this, go and register to enable you vote out this nepotism and tribalistic government,” said Mutharika.
On his part, DPP vice-president for the south Joseph Mwanamvekha noted that some Malawians are living on wild tubers due to the rising prices of fertiliser.
“People are failing to harvest enough food because most of the farmers cannot afford to buy fertiliser. So, you [Mutharika] are our only saviour,” he said.
Chikwawa and Nsanje are among the districts where Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) is currently conducting the third phase of the voters’ registration exercise.
Last week, Mutharika also held a similar whistle-stop tour in Mwanza where MEC is also conducting the third phase of the voters’ registration exercise.
