Malawian star shooter Joyce Mvula has been named among the players to watch in the 2021 English Vitality Netball Super League (VNSL) which throws off today.

Sky Sports has named the Manchester Thunder star among the top 10 players that could light up the English netball top-flight league.

Thunder start their title defence campaign against her compatriot Towera Vinkhumbo-Nyirenda’s new club Strathclyde Sirens tonight.

Some players that have been singled out are Annika Lee-Jones, Beth Cobden, Donnell Wallen and Lindsay Keable.

Mvula: I just can’t explain my excitement

However, in an interview yesterday, Mvula played down her recognition, saying: “I feel honoured, but the league has many more good players.”

The Malawi Queens star also said she is excited with the return of the league after being cancelled last year due to Covid-19.

She said: “I just can’t explain my excitement and I just cannot wait.

“The fact that we will be playing Towera’s team in our opening fixture makes it even more exciting. Hopefully, we can retain the league.”

At the time the league was cancelled last year after four rounds of games, Thunder were top of the table.

Mvula inspired Thunder to win the 2019 title.

Vinkhumbo-Nyirenda was not available for comment.

However, conspicuously missing this season will be Mvula’s teammate and compatriot Loreen Ngwira, who has been ruled out after parting ways with Thunder for unexplained reasons
