Malawi’s Australia-based netball star Mwawi Kumwenda has been cleared to join her club after being in quarantine for 14 days in Sydney, Australia in line with  Covid-19 protocols.

The Melbourne Vixens shooter, who left Sydney yesterday for her base, said she was relieved to be cleared.

“I was looking forward to getting out of quarantine. It was hard for the last 14 days being in just one room,” she said.

Kumwenda: I can’t wait to join the team

Kumwenda also commended her club for supporting her, saying: “I feel lucky to have my Vixens family because they also sent me some equipment for training and I can’t wait to join the team next week and get ready for our 2021 season.”

A report from Australia’s New South Wales Province Police, which The Nation has seen, reads: “Under section seven Public Health Act 2010 the NSW Minister for Health, Brad Hazzard issued the Public Health [Covid-19 Air Transportation Quarantine Order] 2020.

“This order requires any person arriving by aircraft into NSW, who had, within the proceeding 14 days immediately before arrival been in a country other than Australia to go directly into a quarantine facility.

“This is to certify that Mwawi Jacinta Kumwenda has completed the quarantine period being 14 days and nights effective 12 March 2021.”

Three weeks ago, Vixens coach Simone Mckinnis was quoted by Australian newspaper The Sydney Morning Herald as having said: “While we are desperate to have Mwawi join the squad as soon as possible, we understand her situation and we will provide all the necessary support.”
