Mzava secures club after 2 years
South Africa-based former Flames captain Limbikani Mzava can now breathe a sigh of relief after securing a one-year deal with newly promoted DStv Premiership outfit Magesi FC.
The deal ends the lanky defender’s two years of inactivity.
In an interview yesterday, the 31-year-old said he felt relieved after concluding the deal with the Polokwane-based outfit.
He said: “I signed the contract on Sunday, but I am yet to be unveiled. Obviously, I was very excited because it has been a while since I played competitive football.
“As I said, it is not like I wasn’t getting offers, but I just couldn’t get the right one.”
On whether his long lay-off will affect his performance, the soft-spoken footballer said: “Not really because I kept myself active.
“I trained everyday both on the pitch and in the gym. I was also playing for a social team comprising players that have no teams and that kept me going.
“Of course, social football is different from professional level, but I am fit and sound, believe me.”
Mzava’s last club was AmaZulu FC where he featured in his last match on September 25 2021 when he was brought in for the last 10 minutes against Baroka in DStv Premierhsip.
His last competitive appearance was when he featured for the Flames against Zimbabwe’s Warriors at the delayed 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon on January 14 2022 which Malawi won 2-1.
His compatriot Frank Gabadinho Mhango said in a separate interview that he never had doubts about Mzava securing a club in the South African top-flight.
“He is someone who looks after himself very well and he is a goal-getter. He was always training during the time he did not have a club. I am happy for him,” he said.
Mzava went to South Africa in 2011 when he joined Bloemfontein Celtic from the now-defunct Escom United. He also played for Mpumalanga Black Aces, Lamontville Golden Arrows and Highlands Park before joining AmaZulu.
