Mzimba residents hail garbage collection

People in Mzimba District have commended M’Mbelwa District Council for collecting garbage, a development which has resulted in a clean residential and business environment.

In an interview on Tuesday, Maxwell Banda, a resident, said for a long time he observed trends of uncollected garbage in markets around Mzimba Boma which made the town look untidy.

He said: “Whenever we came to town to do business, we could see heaps of uncollected garbage. But the past week the town looks nice.

“I wish the council could clear garbage often to keep Mzimba Boma clean.”

Another resident Alison Gondwe said the council should not wait for garbage to pile up before taking action.

“We pay taxes and the council should ensure that citizens live in a good environment,” he said.

However, Mzimba Main Market committee general secretary Julius Dongo Zgambo said the council has yet to collect refuse in some areas.

He said: “We have seen the council collecting garbage, which is commendable, but there are still some places that need the exercise.

“For instance, the garbage at a section where barbershops are located remains uncollected.”

Mzimba district principal environmental officer James Pelani in an interview said the council acknowledges that it has been unable to collect garbage but it has started to do the exercise.

“The exercise will continue and we will do it in all trading centres. Last week, we collected garbage at Jenda Trading Centre and now we completed collecting refuse at Mzimba Market,” he said.

Pelani said they will now conduct the exercise at Ekwendeni and Euthini.
