Mzuni, students fight over allowance

Mz u z u U n i v e r s i t y m a n a g e m e n t a n d students have since June 3 fought over a K10 000 student allowance, which management resolved not pay.

The students are entitled to a K40 000 (about $100) allowance per month for the four-month semester, meaning they are entitled to K160 000 (about $400) per semester.

However, management decided not to pay them K10 000 (about $25), arguing there was one incomplete month. Some students said, l awf u l l y t h e y we r e claiming what belongs to them, but management del iberately t r ied t o complicate things despite several meetings on the matter.

“It has been a long battle, and it is unfortunate that management did not understand our position. They claimed that they could not give us the full K160 000 because we came on campus mid March and will leave early July. They decided to cling to our K10 000s and we do not know what they wanted to do with our money,” said the student.

Meanwhile, government has ordered the university to make the payment as the students are entitled to K40 000 per month. B o t h Mzuni v i c e – chancellor Robert Ridley and Mzuni students representative council president Abel Phompho confirmed the directive in a separate interview.
