Chibuku Products Limited (CPL) has unveiled ambitious plans to use recycled waste water from its sole factory in the Northern Region to irrigate Mzuzu Prison’s crop fields.

The prison is located on a six-hectare farm near Mzuzu CPL plant, but sometimes experiences food shortage due to over-dependency on rain-fed agriculture.

Jana (L) presents Mahewu to to inmates and Chimodzi in Mzuzu

CPL country head of corporate affairs Villant Jana said the opaque beer producer will support the prison to feed its inmates all year round.

She said this oyesterday after donating Super Shake Mahewu worth about K1 million to the inmates.

Said Jana: “We are very optimistic that this [irrigation project] should take shape in the course of the year. We want the prison to have sustainable agriculture.”

According to her, the Chibuku plant near the prison churns out almost 60 000 litres of waste water every day.

“We have been wasting that water.  From now, we want to put it to good use to ensure inmates feed themselves throughout the year,” Jana said.

Malawi Prison Service (MPS) regional commanding officer Yafet Chimodzi thanked CPL for the project likely to end food challenges faced by the prison “amid rising food prices”.

“The project will help us to produce enough food for inmates on the campus,” he said. n
