Mzuzu Central Hospital has received medical equipment worth K61.6 million from the Rotary Club of Mzuzu that will see the referral hospital carrying out mobile eye health treatment in hard-to-reach areas in the Northern Region.

The equipment includes slit lamp LED, streak retinoscope, direct ophthalmoscope, LCD Auto chart system, trial lens set, Snellen near vision chart, occlude, pinhole, digital auto lens meter and handheld tonometer brand Schioetz.

Handing over the equipment to the hospital on Tuesday, Rotary Club of Mzuzu president Susan Gwamba indicated that the support is part of the five-year eye health project the charity has rolled out with the aim of improving eye health service delivery in most health centres in the Northern Region.

She said the needs assessment done in collaboration with Operation Eye Sight showed that most hospitals in the region had gaps in delivering eye health services due to the shortage of equipment.

“With support from North Folk in the US, we have rolled out the five-year project where we will support hospitals in the north technically and materiality so that they should be able to offer quality eye health care,” Gwamba said.

Receiving the equipment on behalf of the hospital, child health specialist, Bertha Chaputula said the hospital lacked such equipment and this was affecting the service delivery.

“The good thing is that the equipment is mobile compatible. We will be going to rural places carrying out eye health camps,” Chaputula said.

On his part, Operation Eye Sight project manager Blessings Banda hailed the Rotary Club of Mzuzu for the support which he said will go a long way in making sure that people do not lose sight due to the absence of quality service delivery.
