Mzuzu City Assembly has closed Mzuzu Stadium to pave the way for renovations in preparation for this year’s July 6 Independence Day celebrations which the venue will host.

Mzuzu City Council chief executive officer Macloud Kadam’manja said their facility will be reopened on July 5.

He said: “We have been advised that this year’s Independence Day cerebrations will take place at Mzuzu Stadium. As usual, we are improving some of the structures at the venue in readiness for the event. We want to improve the pitch and the Very Important Persons [VIP] stand,” said Kadam’manja.

Meanwhile, Super League of Malawi (Sulom) has revised this weekend’s fixture due to the development.

Mzuzu University (Mzuni) FC, who were supposed to host defending champions Be Forward Wanderers on Saturday, will instead travel to Karonga Stadium and play Silver Strikers on Sunday.

Moyale Barracks, who were supposed to host Wanderers on Sunday at the same venue, will now play Masters Security FC at Dedza Stadium.

The changes, however, have not gone down well with affected teams.

”This has affected our preparations. Perhaps, the problem is with MCC officials who have abruptly told us about the development,” said Mzuni FC chairperson Albert Harawa.

Moyale Barracks FC general secretary Isaac Banda and Karonga United chairperson Alufeyo Chipanga Banda, also shared the same views in separate interviews.

But Sulom general secretary Williams Banda said teams should expect such changes because match venues are not owned by Sulom.
