Mzuzu Stadium remains in bad state

Mzuzu City Council (MCC) has said Mzuzu Stadium will still host Super League games during the season starting on April 17 although some parts of the facility are in bad shape.

Last October, strong winds damaged iron sheets at the Very Important People (VIP) Stand which also houses the broadcasting room.

“This is the only main venue in the Northern Region; there is no way we can close it, Super League games will still take place there despite its poor state. Of course, we need to attend to the pitch before the season starts,” said Pondelani, who admitted that the council has no money to repair the whole stadium.

“Our wish has been to see the whole facility repaired, but lack of resources is thwarting our plans,” he said.

Northern Region Football Association (NRFA) chairperson Lameck Khonje said he would meet the council over the state of the stadium.

Super League of Malawi (Sulom) president Innocent Bottoman said they will soon inspect all football grounds earmarked to host Super League matches next season.

“Those found to be in poor state will not be allowed to host Super League games. However, we will engage Mzuzu City Council to renovate the ground before the season starts,” said Bottoman.
