Nasfam project uplifts farmers in Kasunguasked

National Smallholder Farmers Association of Malawi (Nasfam) says its interventions in Kasungu District are showing positive results in improving the livelihood of smallholder farmers.

Nasfam Kasungu innovative productivity centre manager Edwin Chione said this during a media tour on Friday that Nasfam organised to showcase the impact of its interventions.

He said farmers under the organisation have benefitted from various initiatives aimed at enhancing productivity.

Chione said Nasfam’s interventions were helping farmers not only to improve their agricultural output, but also gain financial stability through business ventures, thereby helping them diversify their income sources.

“Our farmers are now seeing tangible results. Many have invested in businesses and acquired assets, which reflects the progress we are making,” he said.

Charles Tembo, a member of Wimbe Group Action Committee under Chamama Association, attributed his improved farming practices to the training he received from Nasfam.

He said he earned over K27 million from the sale of soy beans, tobacco and other crops in the previous farming season.

“In addition to farming, I also run a mobile money branch. As a tobacco farmer, I also plant trees to address the challenges posed by climate change,” said Tembo.

He said the organisation’s emphasis on soy bean production has been successful, providing a steady income source for many farmers.

Nasfam is supporting 10 000 farmers in Kasungu. Out of this figure, 6 000 are focusing on soy bean farming and 4 000 are practising mixed cropping
