SuperSport has appointed Malawi Queens legend Mary Waya as one of African analysts at the 2023 Netball World Cup live broadcasts in Cape Town, South Africa between July 28 and August 6.

This is the first time the sports broadcaster, which will beam all the 60 matches on SuperSport and GOtv channels, has included a Malawian among its analysts at the global netball fiesta.

Waya: it’s a great honour

In a press release, SuperSport explained that former internationals New Zealand’s Anna Stanley, Australia’s Madison Browne, England’s Pamela Cookey and Jamaica’s Simone Forbes will also be host broadcasters for the event.

“Seasoned broadcasters Jenny Woods, Caroline Barker and Sue Gaudion will also be in the mix,” the statement explains in part.

“The rest of the African continent will be represented by Mary Waya, who has played more than 200 matches for Malawi, Ruth Meeme, who represented Uganda at the 2015 and 2019 World Cups and Perpetua Siyachitema, who captained Zimbabwe at the 2019 Netball World Cup.”

The coverage is expected to be anchored by top-rated Andee Mahamba, with a range of top local guests who represented South Africa’s Proteas.

Waya, who is deputy director responsible for capacity building and schools sports in the Ministry of Youth and Sports, yesterday said it was a great honour to be considered for the role.

“It is a rare opportunity and I feel greatly humbled for the recognition. I just cannot wait,” said the former Queens and Namibia national netball team coach.

Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) general secretary Isaac Chimwala yesterday said: “It is exciting to note that our own legend Mary Waya is among the selected analysts for the games representing Africa. Congratulations to the real legend. This is fantastic news.”
