The Lawn Tennis Association of Malawi (Ltam) ushered into office a new executive committee led by Francis Mwansa during elections held at Blantyre Sports Club.

The new members will be in office for two years.

All members in the previous committee, including former president Duncan Gumbi and ex-treasurer Mike Bamford, did not contest during the polls that had Sports Council administration manager Henry Mereka and sports development officer Ruth Mzengo as retaining officers.

To take the hot seat, Blantyre-based Mwansa collected 45 votes while Titani Muwalo from Lilongwe and Janet Thindwa from Mzuzu emerged second and third with 24 and 19 ballots respectively.

Thindwa took the vice-presidency after Muwalo withdrew his candidature.

Mwansa promised to bring lawn tennis to its former glory by focusing on infrastructure development, youth development and more competitions for senior players.

“We need to revamp the tennis brand in Malawi. We have not done much to expose and motivate our players. However, it is everybody’s responsibility to help us achieve this feat,” said Mwansa.

Golden Banda is the new general secretary after he beat Pachisi Nyasulu with 53 ballots against 29. Nyasulu automatically became the vice-general secretary.

President Joyce Banda’s son Roy Kachale and Christopher Kachale (not related), were about to tussle for the treasury post when Roy suddenly changed his mind and offered to support his opponent. So, Ltam’s purse is in Christopher Kachale’s custody.

Roy, Wilson Paul, Owen Mfune, Charles Msatiyenda and Loga accepted were drafted in as committee members.
