Big Bullets assistant coach Gerald Phiri Snr has put his money on trend-setters Red Lions to land their first TNM Super League title.

“They deserve to be champions. They have done well and they are consistent. If they continue playing this way, they surely deserve to win the league title. We lost to a better team,” Phiri said this after Bullets wasted an opportunity to go top by losing 3-2 to the soldiers at Kamuzu Stadium on Saturday.

Seeking to emulate fellow soldiers Kamuzu Barracks and Mafco, who have won silverware this season after bagging the Carlsberg Cup and the Presidential Cup, Red Lions have dictated matters at the league summit for over a month.

Their coach Mike Kumanga was over the moon after the rare win over Bullets at Kamuzu Stadium where the soldiers usually play second fiddle to the People’s Team.

“This is our time to win our first-ever league championship. We want to return the favour to our Army Commander [Henry Odillo] for the support he is rendering to us. I am certain that this time around, we will win it. There is no stopping us. It will be possible because we believe so,” said the former Flames left-back.

However, last Monday, Blantyre United principal striker Sparrow Msowoya argued that genuine championship contender is yet to appear on the horizon despite that the Lions still leading.

“Let us wait and see. As of now, it is unpredictable. If we talk about Red Lions, they always lead like this, but at the end of the day you won’t even see them in the top five. I believe real champions are coming,” Msowoya observed.
