New Finance Bank supports girl child through golf

 

New Finance Bank (NFB) in partnership with United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund (Unicef) and the Ministry of Education Science and Technology at the weekend supported the girl’s child cause through a ladies’ golf tournament.

The two-day tournament, held at Blantyre Sports Club (BSC), was played under the theme ‘Tee Off for the Girl Child’ and was graced by the Minister of Education, Science and Technology Bright Msaka on the opening day.

Roza Mbilizi, who is ranked the best female golfer on the domestic scene, emerged overall champion after coming out tops in Championship Division.

The 11-handicaped (h/c) golfer had 163 gross while Joline Bapu (18h/c) was the runner up with a 197 gross-score. Regina Mwanza (17h/c) was third with 199 gross whereas Connie Karuku (17h/c) finished fourth with 205 gross.

Mwanza also won the nearest to the pin and longest drive accolades on holes 12 and 17, respectively.

Jochebed Mpanga (h/c26) was the winner in A Division with an 188 gross score while BSC ladies gold captain Bose Kamphulusa (24h/c) was second with 193 gross. She counted out Fortune Lee (23h/c).

In B Division, Jeong-Ok-Yoo (27h/c) emerged champion followed by Linda Kunje (30h/c) who had 225 gross while Margaret Mkwanda (28h/c) finished third with a 234 gross-score. She counted out Sophie Kalambule (27h/c).

Mbilizi, also had the best net-score (125), said it felt good to win a tournament organised for the cause of the girl child.

“We have played with a lot of sponsors before, but the theme of this particular tournament was very touching to us as mothers, so I feel really proud,” she said.

NFB chief commercial officer Bernard Mkandawire said they thought it wise to partner Unicef and the ministry because the issue of girl child is important.

“We are keen in financing children more, especially girlsbecause we strongly believe  that educating a girl child is actually  educating a nation; hence, the decision to fund the initiative, thereby taking part in uplifting the lives and education of the girl child,” he said.n
