Kapiri Community Development Organisation has donated 88 desks worth K9 million to Gandali and Kanyerere primary schools in Mchinji Ditrict.

Speaking on Saturday during the handover at Gandali Primary School, the organisation’s monitoring and evaluation officer Dyson Chikoti said many children lose interest in education when resources are scarce in school.

“Children lose interest when vital resources such as desks are not available in school. This is why we thought it wise to help with the little we have so that these children have access to quality education,” he said.

Chikoti said one of their goals is to see the communities excel in development and that they can only develop their area if they are educated.

Mchinji district education sports officer Henry Chonde commended the NGO for the support.

Pupils admire the new desks

“We appreciate what the NGO has done. Government cannot reach out to all areas that need such resources.  This is why we do not take such help from organisations for granted,” he said.

Gandali Primary School head teacher Joseph Makhwazi said the desks will motivate learners to attend classes.

He, however, complained that the school has shortage of teachers.

“The school has 1 088 learners against 10 teachers which is a challenge because it means one teacher handles an average of 100 pupils, which is against the recommended teacher to pupil ratio,” said Makhwazi.

The organisation made the donation with support from ActionAid.
