Action for Environmental Sustainability has recognised Ntalawe Green Facilitated Collective Action Process Club in Traditional Authority Mkhumba in Phalombe District for its outstanding performance in piggery production and environmental conservation.
The organisation’s project coordinator Flora Madikhula said on Saturday during the presentation of a K1 million cheque to the club as part of efforts to motivate the members to continue protecting the environment.
“Ntalawe was selected as the best performing club out of 12 because the members are united and committed to the work we gave them,” she said.
Madikhula said the 38-member club impressed through its piggery production and tree-planting activities, which are part of the organisation’s community livelihoods project.
“Each of the 38 members received a pig under this project and the group is now waiting for a second round to receive more. This shows that they have taken ownership of the initiative,” she said.
Madikhula further noted that besides tree-planting exercises, the club was also taking care of existing trees.
Spark Microgrants programmes manager David Matabwa, whose firm supported Action for Environmental Sustainability, urged club members to continue working together for the project to succeed.
“There is power in unity. For this project to be successful and continue, you must maintain coordination and commitment as a group,” he said.
Ntalawe Green Facilitated Collective Action Process Club chairperson Rachel Sumbuleta described the award as timely, saying the money will go a long way in supporting the club’s piggery activities.
Village head Ntalawe said the project has improved household incomes in his village.
