NGO promotes children’s well-being in Chitipa

Thembi Community Initiative health coordinator Besta Mwambila has emphasised the need to promote the well-being of vulnerable children in Chitipa District.

He said this on Saturday when his organi sation distributed maize to 200 households in Traditional Authority Mwabulambya in the district.

Mwambila said the donation followed an assessment they conducted in the area that revealed widespread hunger among community members.

She said : “Being an organisation that has been supporting children since 2016 with their basic needs, including education, we decided to distribute the maize to help address hunger in their homes.

“So, the food distribution initiative covers the lean period from November to March.”

Mwambi la, however, said the initiative was facing resource constraints to reach more vulnerable children in the district.

Chitipa district monitoring and evaluation officer from the Non-Governmental Organisation Regulatory Authority Patrick Mkonongo praised Thembi Community Initiative’s transparency and commitment to supporting vulnerable children.

He said: “I am impressed with the organisation’s work as it is helping in the health and agricultural sectors.

“Most importantly, the organisation is transparent with what it is doing which allows us to monitor its works.”

On his part, Senior Chief Mwabulambya thanked the initiative for its efforts in promoting development in his area.

“The huma n i t a r i an assistance to vulnerable children is invaluable because these children will be able to complete their education and become productive in future,” he said.

The chief called on other well-wishers to emulate the gesture set by the organisation.

One of the children who benefitted from the initiative, Uchizi, commended the organisation for supporting her family.

She said: “The organisation has supported me family in many areas, including education, food and livestock.

“My family did not harvest enough last growing season and the food support will help me a lot.”
