Chimwemwe Safe Space secretary Ashanti Kamtaule said the 13 groups represent safe spaces where girls discuss issues that affect them, including gender-based violence (GBV), education and conflict.

She said the grants will empower girls economically, thereby contributing positively towards the development of their areas.

Said Kamtaule: “The training has equipped us with skills on how to develop viable business plans and how to manage our income from our businesses.

“So, we will record every transaction in the ledger book to see if there is progress or not.”

On his part, Kilupula Peace Movement chairperson Moshi Fundi said they formed 13 safe space groups to enhance peace through a peace building project that seeks to foil child trafficking and fight GBV and mob justice.

“The essence was to bring about peace in the area. We are pleased that through the United Nations Population Fund, we have received grants to run businesses to complement our efforts and sustain the project,” he said.

On his part, Kilupula community development assistant officer Daniel Moyo described the girls and women empowerment initiative as a milestone towards building a peaceful community.

Pamoza Tingakwaniska Youth Organisation media officer Emmanuel Moyo said the seed money that the safe spaces received from the UN Secretary General’s Peace Building Fund aims at addressing some of the pressing issues in communities, including GBV.
