NGO promotes sanitation in schools in Dowa District

Self Help Africa has stepped up efforts to promoting sanitation and hygiene in some primary schools in Dowa District through an initiative dubbed Shasha.

The organisation’s integrated water sanitation and hygiene project manager Joel Ndeule said the initiative encompasses sustainable and accountable gender responsive sanitation, hygiene and menstrual services for adolescent boys and girls.

Speaking on Saturday during a prize presentation at Chilima Primary School in Traditional Authority Mponela in Dowa, he said sanitation and hygiene were crucial in promoting a good learning environment.

Ndeule commended the school for emerging the winner in promoting sanitation and hygiene practices.

He said: “We think the initiative is a powerful tool for engaging learners to build a foundation to practise good sanitation and hygiene.

“Sanitation and hygiene is largely a behaviour issue. So, we want to ensure that we plant that seed in young people.”

Ndeule expressed satisfaction that communities were responding well to sanitation issues.

Dowa district acting chief education officer Dorothy Mzungu said the initiative has promoted sanitation and hygiene in most schools in the district.

“Education is not only about learning in class. It starts with hygiene,” he said.
